The STEAM approach in class is a multidisciplinary approach which combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. First used in the United States and then in Europe and Asia, and now in Quebec, the goal of this educational approach is to stimulate students’ interest for science and technology, while developing their creative and problem-solving abilities.
A stimulating method to learn about science and technology
This project-based educational method, which can be used at both elementary school and middle school , has many benefits for students:
- Stimulates creativity
- Develops critical thinking
- Develops a taste for experimentation
- Encourages innovation
- Makes learning science more efficient
- Promotes collaboration and develops team spirit
- Improves confidence, flexibility and independence
Using digital technology, computer processes and even robotics, the STEAM educational method develops individual and collaborative creative talents. It focuses on techno-creative problem solving which often involves various disciplines.
Ultimately, the STEAM approach prepares students for college programs in art, design or technology. It prepares them for careers as engineers, graphic designers, analysts, software or video game developers, architects, robotics specialists, videographers, environmental technologists and many others! The STEAM educational method trains creative minds ready to take on tomorrow’s challenges!
A connected hydroponic garden: a real-world project to apply the STEAM educational method
The Vireo connected hydroponic garden, can be installed in a classroom and can be operated in any season. This collaborative project helps students learn how to set up and operate a hydroponic growing system (no dirt handling required!).
The project integrates several disciplines in science and technology: biology, mathematics, engineering, computer science and digital technology. Students are responsible for the garden and must learn how to operate it in an optimal way. They have access to a digital platform (designed for schools) that is brimming with content and intuitive features.
A digital platform created for schools’ realities
On the digital platform, students will find activities related to agronomic sciences, the environment, health, sustainable development, entrepreneurship, science and technology, and that’s not all. These activities, as well as a digital library are accessible to the entire school! You can even test the platform for free.
Vireo offers all the material and support necessary to create and maintain the connected hydroponic garden. This includes access to the digital educational platform with many intuitive features and educational content adapted to the day-to-day of schools.
The connected hydroponic garden is a true living laboratory where students can observe, experiment, learn and collaborate in a real-world setting. Through this STEAM activity, every student can satisfy their scientific curiosity and develop their independence.
Many private, public and alternative schools in Quebec are already equipped with the Vireo connected hydroponic garden, including l’école Calixa-Lavallée, in Montréal-Nord. It would be our pleasure to explain to you how this educational project works and enable your students to learn in a fun and stimulating way! Don’t hesitate to contact us.
