What is personalized learning?
Personalized learning is an alternative to the traditional educational approach where teachers give lecture-based classes along with the same homework and exams to all students. It aims to facilitate each student’s academic success based on their learning needs, interests and ambitions. Teachers then provide content and support that is more or less personalized according to each student.
On paper, this appears simple, but logistically, it gets a bit more complicated. However, teachers can leverage digital technologies to help them. By using digital platforms (applications), they can present educational content to students which they can learn independently at their own pace.
Since youngsters in elementary school, middle school and high school are used to using digital technologies at home, they are motivated by the idea of using them at school. Digital platforms contain content that can also be used to do homework and even special projects or educational workshops.
Digital educational platforms can be used as part of a curriculum or as a complement to the program, during a workshop/special activity. They can be offered by companies, institutions, organizations or by the government (a national platform will be created this year as part of the Quebec government’s digital action plan).
The benefits of digital platforms
In a personalized teaching context, digital platforms offer major benefits for both students and teachers:
- Students can study content selected according to their level of progress, while having goals to meet and tests to pass;
- Teachers don’t have to give traditional classes as frequently to share content, which gives them more time to do other things;
- Students who need explanations can be helped by the teacher while fasters students finish their work;
- Students are stimulated by interactive content that is customizable according to their interests;
- Teachers can better follow each student’s progress and evaluate their level of learning;
- Interactive, fun, educational content stimulates and motivates students.
